Our design for the Bridewell is a sympathetic adaptation of a Grade II* listed ex-police station and cells into contemporary student accommodation.
Working with Liverpool developer Jamworks Ltd, Our scheme has brought life back to the rare example of mid-19th century city centre prison, which had stood unused since 1999. Arranged in 15 clusters around a shared kitchen/diner, each of the 86 bedrooms has an en-suite shower room as well as spacious sleeping and study areas.
The design retains the cellular structure internally, showcasing the beautiful brick work and unusual metalwork and oak cell doors. The old exercise yard, once open to the elements, has been covered with a muscular glass roof, allowing daylight to flood down into a communal lounge.
Demolishing an unattractive 1970’s extension returned the front façade to its 1893 grandeur, with the impressive round headed windows running the full length of the elevation creating a sense of arrival.
