Mile End Road reaches practical completion

Practical completion of a newly constructed 4 storey, 80 bed hotel on Mile End Road, Tower Hamlets has been achieved, despite the ongoing challenges presented by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The hotel, designed by architectural practice Falconer Chester Hall for Middlehaven Investments Limited, started on-site in May 2019 and has opened as part of the Travelodge hotel portfolio, welcoming its first guests at the end of September 2020.

Chris Cox, Director at Falconer Chester Hall commented “this has been an interesting project to be part of.  The location of the site presented a number of technical constraints which required a unique design solution that remained sensitive to the adjoining Grade II listed building.

Situated partially over Stepney Green underground station, the entire front section of the building is designed as a cantilever that imposes no load on to the station below.  The materials palette and facade proportions reference the adjoining Grade II Malplaquet House with a subtle acknowledgment of the cantilever through a change in brick colour.”

Simon Ashdown of LPC Living (advisor for Middlehaven Investments Limited) added “we are delighted to have reached this significant milestone on the Mile End Road Hotel, despite the current COVID-19 pandemic.  The teams involved have embraced the technical challenges throughout the project to keep this development on track.  The hotel is ideally placed, just a short walk to Stepney Green underground station which provides excellent links to central London and will be operated by Travelodge”
