“Falconer Chester Hall Architects (FCH) has won planning for a £2million penthouse extension on the roof of 190–196 City Road, London. A previously proposed rooftop extension by Simon Conder Associates was refused by Islington Council last December. The new design features two three-bedroom apartments and one two-bedroom apartment housed in a 486m² single storey extension ‘in keeping with the Moorfields Conservation Area’.
According to the practice, the proposal is based on a ‘traditional mansard roof form’ which minimises the visual impact from street level.
Mark Doohan, director of FCH Architects, said: ‘Designing a building in a conservation area, especially at a site that has previously been refused planning permission, is a challenge and required a fresh creative solution.
‘By focusing on the context and working closely with Islington Council, we were able to create a design that responded to, rather than overwhelmed, the existing character and qualities of the building. I believe we’ve created an elegant, practical and contemporary design solution.’
Work will also take place to refurbish the existing building, which was previously the headquarters of fashion company Jaeger. The facade will be cleaned and repairs will enhance the appearance of the building at street level. Work is expected to start on site early next year (2015) and complete later that year.”
