One Silk Street is located within the Ancoats Conservation Area, a rich social and architectural heritage area that contains the highest density of Grade II and II* listed buildings in Manchester.
This 9 storey mixed-use scheme for The Northern Group promotes family living and diversity, providing residents with winter gardens and an accessible outdoor communal roof garden. The commercial space is split over the ground, 1st and 2nd floors, with 75 build to rent 1,2 and 3 bed apartments located on the upper floors.
The façade provides a modern interpretation of the building typology in this part of Manchester City Centre, through the use of linear handmade contemporary brickwork, detailed through deep articulated stepped reveals to the window bays. The crown of the building on the 8th floor is set back to reduce the massing impact on the surrounding buildings and contrasting with the main building’s material treatment, through the use of modern curtain walling.
Expressed fins provide an additional textured layer of interest that references the monolithic brickwork grid below. The heavily landscaped roof terrace provides substantial communal external space and further encourages a sense of community within this development.
This scheme has been developed from an original design by Mecanoo Architects.
